Recession in China could be a technical recession

Marc Faber : ..recession in China could be a technical recession , if you go and slow down from a growth rate of say ten percent to a growth rate of three percent then there is a recession , also I do not believe in the growth rate that China publishes , because if you had adjusted nominal GDP for the true rate of inflation then real growth is of course much slower , you know I want to tell you something that disturbs me in all emerging economies and in many other developed economies , from my taste in front of luxury hotels there are far too many Ferraries and Maseraties and Bentleys and this is not a good sign , you should see depression when conditions are depressed . I see a boom everywhere except for the working class and except for the lower middle class , but among the well-to-do people the wealth that is floating around and the prices you pay for high end properties is incredible and I think that will come to an end and a lot of people will lose a lot of money and so I am ultra careful at the present time ....." The Inflation in the US is ten percent

Marc Faber : "...we had a huge run in asset prices , from the lows in March 2009 until recently , I do not think they will continue to go up a lot , I rather think that QE2 will come to an end that we will have a correction and then we will have more money printing but it may not help the economy at all "

"...I think what will happen is that these deficits will stay very high and that they will lead to very high inflation rates most likely hyperinflation not tomorrow but over time , all I can say is I travel a lot and I am surprised that the US can publish a consumer price index of two percent when everything I see is up significantly in price not a little bit , significantly and so I think here the rate of inflation has to be closer between 5 and 10 percent ,in my opinion closer to ten percent than five percent ,and elsewhere I also see prices going up substantially and so the potential for high inflation is actually there ....."

We will have significant geopolitical problems in the world

Marc Faber : "...well I think we had huge move (in equities) from march 2009 lows and then we made an intermediate peak in April 2010 and then we had a big correction in July first 2010 and since then the S&P rose from 1010 to a peak of 1370 the other day and so basically we had from the low in last July a rise of 35 percent and I think we need a correction period for these markets and we need a shake out both for commodities and for equities , and I think , people always ask why is the market is going up and why is the market going down and frequently you will know later on , I happen to think that the global economy is slowing down meaningfully at the present time and that earnings estimates are by in large too optimistic and that we will also have significant geopolitical problems in the world "

Bonds bubble like Dot-com bubble

Marc Faber on the Bonds bubble , Marc Faber recommends to stay away from the 19 year long bull run : “I think there isn’t much upside potential in Treasuries unless it’s for the short term. Even the short term is uncertain. But if I look 10 years ahead, where do I want to have my money? Certainly not in U.S. Treasuries.” "In 1999-2000, foreigners also wanted to buy the Nasdaq, and what happened after that was a massive collapse," Faber said. "So I don't see foreign buying as a very intelligent leading indicator." Marc Faber explained that he is 'not interested in buying an asset class that has been in a bull market for 19 years,' and that he would rather place his investments in farmland, agricultural commodities and of course gold.

Crude Oil is still the cheapest alternative for energy

Marc Faber " I would not take off for a long time and believe me crude oil is still the cheapest alternative for energy and I live in the North of Thailand I mean the people in the countryside they still drive the motorcycs they are not giving to have a motorcycles with batteries but too expensive. So in emerging economies in the last 18 months although we had a huge collapse in economic activity globally their oil demand still growing and in the developed world it is going down and so forth I am convinced that in Asia the oil demand over the next 20 years will more than double so we consume today in Asia 22 million barrels a day. We will go to something like 40 million barrels. The oil production in the world is 85 million barrels of oil a day and every year we find new oil but we use much more oil than we find new reserves so essentially the reserve level in the world is going down. So eventually I suppose we will have much higher prices. " in ET Now

Gold is My Favorite Currency

Dr. Marc Faber author publisher and editor of the Gloom, Boom & Doom report talking about his love for Gold calling it his favorite currency : ..."...I am not a perennial gold bug. But, when governments spend far more than they collect in taxes (large fiscal deficits), and when central bankers engage in reckless monetary policies and, instead of treating the causes of the problems (excessive debt growth), treat the symptoms (deflationary forces), gold as a currency does make a lot of sense. I need to clarify one point. When gold recently broke out on the upside above $1,000 per ounce I maintained that, whereas in the past the $1,000 level had been an area of resistance, with gold now above $1,000 it had become an area of support. I also said that if gold failed to hold above $1,000, I would become extremely concerned; and that in such a case a sell-off to $800 could not be ruled out, as failed breakout moves can lead to violent counter-movements. My feeling is that gold will hold above $1,000 and will trend higher over time. In fact, the breakout move of gold above $1,000 could be as significant as the decisive breakout move of the Dow Jones above the 1,000 level in early 1983..."

Bond yields will “rise massively,” Marc Faber told the the German newspaper Handelsblatt explaining that bond yields will rise massively and U.S. government bonds could eventually become worthless as central banks worldwide , led by the Federal Reserve, keep on printing more money in an effort to boost economies,

‘You want to be in gold, silver, platinum and also oil. If you believe in a recovery of asset prices as a result of money printing, you should be in hard assets, particularly precious metals. "I think this stock market rally may have more legs, because if you print money it liquefies the system for a while and asset prices move up accordingly. I think what the government is doing and its economic dream team of Ben Bernanke, Tim Geithner and Larry Summers will be negative long-term. Marc Faber outlook for the S&P

Marc Faber : ‘I would look at the market to close probably a bit lower than it started the year in 2010. Equally, I don’t think we have a huge downside risk. Bullish on Japanese Equities

‘If I had to make a bet for the next 10 years in terms of equity markets, I would seriously consider a very strong weighting in Japan…the interest payments on the government debt in Japan and the fiscal deficits will become very burdensome but that will necessitate monetisation. That will bring about a huge shift of money out of cash and bonds into equities.’ - Marc Faber

Marc Faber latest on Gold and Silver

Long-time gold bull Marc Faber provided his latest thoughts on the price of gold and silver on Tuesday at the New York Hard Assets Investment Conference. Faber, editor of The Gloom, Boom & Doom Report, reiterated his bullish outlook on gold but made cautious comments on stocks and cyclical commodities. He argued that the recent growth in Chinese money supply, which has surpassed that of the U.S., increases the prospects for further interest rate increases in China. Tighter monetary policy will in turn pressure equities and the broader commodities complex, both of which have benefitted substantially from unprecedented levels of liquidity from central banks.

US vs Emerging Economies

I think the world has to learn that the US is no longer as relevant as it was 20 years ago to the global economy
. I mean the share of the US in the global economy has diminished very substantially you have higher car sales in China than in the United States and by the way car sales today in emerging economies including Indian, Latin American, China and so forth are larger than in the G-16 countries. In other words it is larger than in Western Europe to US and Japan combined so also oil consumption in emerging economies today is larger than in the developed countries. So we are dealing with the totally new world. There has been a huge shift in the balance of economic power between the rich countries, the arrogant countries of the west and the emerging economies that are coming up and that also will lead to tensions in my opinion political and geopolitical tensions - Marc Faber

China and Gold

”Now, just consider what the impact would be if China were to increase its gold holdings from presently less than 2 per cent of its $2.2 trillion reserves to 6 per cent or 10 per cent. Each 1 per cent increase in gold weighting would mean gold purchases of more than $20 billion, or nearly 600 tonnes,” - Marc Faber

Hyperinflation in the USA

I am 100% sure that the U.S. will go into hyperinflation. Not tomorrow, but the problem with the government debt growing so much is that when the time will come and the Fed should increase interest rates, they'll be very reluctant to do so and so inflation will start to accelerate. - Marc Faber in Bloomberg

Deflation vs. Inflation

“Surely, it is academically interesting to discuss for hours whether we are in a ‘deflationary’ or ‘inflationary’ economic environment. The different views on this issue have become extremely polarized with the deflationists maintaining that equities and commodities will collapse and that government bonds will rally. The believers in higher future inflation rates on the other hand argue that large fiscal deficits and expansionary monetary policies will boost selected asset prices and eventually flow into rising consumer prices and lead to higher interest rates. But, as I have tried to show by comparing oil with natural gas prices, in an economic system some prices may be rising, while others decline. This process is continuous and particularly evident in the price movements of various asset classes when there are massive excess capacities, which constrain new capital investments, and zero interest rates, which force cash holders to ‘speculate’ in one, or the other, asset class.” - Marc Faber

silver may outperform gold but I stick to gold because my safe deposit box is not large enough to put enough silver in it

Silver may outperform gold but I stick to gold because my safe deposit box is not large enough to put enough silver in it said Dr. Marc Faber editor of the gloom Boom and Doom report in a recent interview with McAlavany radio host : "....First of all, I think that gold and silver will move in the same direction, but as I tried to explain earlier on, when you print money, essentially, everything goes up, but at different times, and with different intensities. In a bull market, usually, toward the tail end of the bull market, silver tends to grossly outperform gold. So, yes, maybe it will outperform gold, but I stick to gold because my safe deposit box is not large enough to put enough silver in it, whereas, it is large enough to put enough gold in it.Different people have different takes on this, and my friend Eric Sprott, who knows the silver and gold markets extremely well, thinks that silver will go ballistic. Yes, maybe that is true, but I do not think that silver will go up alone, without gold also moving. The direction will be same. Concerning China, yes, I suppose that silver would have a larger industrial component than gold, but as I pointed out, if China collapses and there is a huge deflationary scare, I suppose that it is the real industrial commodities, like copper and nickel and so forth, would be more vulnerable than gold and silver..."

Marc Faber : Stocks and Silver Will Fall Sharply In May

Marc Faber author publisher and editor of The Gloom Boom and Doom report has just released his latest issue of the Gloom, Boom, and Doom Report where he discussed his outlook for the stock market, gold, emerging markets, and other financial topics. Here are a few highlights from the report:
Via The Daily Crux:

The markets are due for a correction and the technicals point to a weak market, Faber tells Wall Street Pit. In particular, he points to the decline in new 52-week highs as evidence of an unhealthy internal market.

Right now, Faber advises investors determined to buy stocks to stay away from cyclicals, tech stocks, and banks, sticking with safer plays such as consumer staples.

Faber, publisher of The Gloom, Boom and Doom report, likes gold as a long-term investment.

He’s more cautious when it comes to silver because of its recent runup in the price, and expects a 20-percent-plus correction in the metals complex because the inflation trade has become too crowded.

Faber says copper and the S&P 500 are highly correlated, and finds he fact that the stock index reached a new high while the metal didn’t is another signal that stocks could follow commodities lower in the short-term.

Faber says the U.S. housing market has another 10 percent to fall, but valuations are now attractive and housing hasn’t been this cheap since the early 1980s. In a serious inflation environment, Faber would rather own housing than paper dollars.

Marc Faber on China M2 money supply

Long-time commodity bull Marc Faber adds that China’s M2 money supply could be the trigger for further declines in commodity prices as the country’s interest rates are raised. The growth of China’s M2 money supply, which has exceeded the U.S. total, signals further declines in commodities and stocks as it boosts prospects for more interest- rate increases in the world’s second-largest economy, according to investor Marc Faber. in Bloomberg

Stocks went up because of huge injections of liquidity by all governments around the world

Marc Faber : We have had a powerful rally since the beginning of the year. Some markets have gone up by 100% or so. A correction right now is a normal part of the cycle. Stocks didn’t necessarily go up because of an improvement in the fundamentals. They went up because of huge injections of liquidity by all governments around the world. In order to continue to grow asset prices higher, fiscal deficits and inflation will continue at a high rate

stocks will go up because of money printing

Marc Faber “The more things will go bad, the worse things become, the more the money printer at the Fed, Mr. Bernanke, will print,” “He will print endlessly. Even if things go bad economically, you could have no revenues at companies and no earnings and stocks will go up because of money printing.”

Only at the Federal Reserves is there no inflation

"The absolute level of interest rates doesn’t tell you whether there is tightening or not. In China, they increased the interest rates over the several times. But with inflation running at between 8-10% per annum and the deposit rate at 3.25%, money is losing its purchasing power if you keep it on deposit,"
"In US, you will have a similar process. One day they will increase it by a quarter of percent but what does it mean when commodity prices are going through the roof, energy prices are going up, health costs are going up, insurance premiums are going up, everything is going up. Only at the Federal Reserves is there no inflation." - Marc Faber in Moneycontrol

Interest rates at zero on US dollar

“I think the difficulty is what to do with money when interest rates are essentially at zero on US dollar then obviously people look at their portfolios and they see stocks that have dividend yields. In Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, you can have stocks yielding 5% on the dividend. So, the money flows essentially into these stocks.” - Marc Faber

cash and bonds will be very dangerous in the next 10 years

Marc Faber : cash and bonds will be very dangerous in the next 10 years as governments increase money supply to cover fiscal deficits.
"There's no other way out but to print money," "In the long run, all paper money will go exactly to its intrinsic value, which is zero." Faber said at a forum in Seoul advising investors to protect themselves with real assets such as gold and silver.
